“Size zero” became front-page news in September when model Luisel Ramos aged 22 collapsed on a runway during Uruguay’s Fashion Week in August 2006 moments after being applauded by spectators; she later died from heart failure after apparently trying to survive on Diet Coke and lettuce leaves.News emerged that she had fasted to lose weight as she readied for the show. As a result, co-ordinators of Madrid’s Fashion Week banned from the event models whose body mass index (BMI, a measurement of body fat according to weight and height) fell below 18, which was considered unhealthy.
Since then, Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston too, died from the pressures of maintaining slimness; her diet was reported to consist solely of apples and tomatoes and she died from renal failure.

Size 0 is a women’s clothing size in the US system equivalent to a UK size 4, with a waist measurement of a tiny 23 inches, the average girth of an 8 year old girl.
DEFINITION OF AN EATING DISORDER
Definition of an Eating Disorder is when a person eats, or refuses to eat, in order to satisfy a psychic need and not a physical need. The person doesn't listen to bodily signals or perhaps is not even aware of them. A normal person eats when hungry and stops eating when the body doesn't need more, she/he feels the signal of satisfaction.
DEFINITION OF ANOREXIA NERVOSA
The anorexic's thoughts aredue to loss of appetitebeing thin and the person may restrict the types and amount of food they eat, over-exercise, use appetite suppressants, make themselves vomit, use laxatives or anything else they can think of to achieve weight loss. Someone with anorexia will spend a large part of their day thinking about weight and counting calories, kilojoules, fat grams or carbohydrates. Anorexics feel a sense of control and power from being able to restrict their body weight and food intake and also experience intense fear of gaining weight and/or being perceived as fat. She/he also has a distorted body image which means that the individual sees themselves as fat even if their weight is normal or below normal. The person may also binge and/or purge from time to time. Anorexics typically resist maintaining a normal weight for their height and age.
DEFINITION OF BULIMIA NERVOSA
The bulimic is trapped in a cycle of bingeing (eating a higher than normal quantity of food accompanied by feelings of loss of control), followed by compensatory behaviour to reduce the unpleasant feelings that accompany the binge and to prevent weight gain. Compensatory behaviour generally involves self-induced vomiting but can include use of laxatives, fasting, vigorous exercise etc. Some bulimics may only binge and purge once in a while, while others will do so several times a day. Someone suffering from bulimia also has a pre-occupation with their weight and body shape. The bulimic is not necessarily underweight and may have a normal or above-normal weight with frequent fluctuations in weight.
SYMPTOMS OF BULIMIA NERVOSA & ANOREXIA NERVOSA
Anorexia Nervosa
Both diseases are much more than 'slimming diseases'. Sufferers may have been abused as children or have been in painful relationships, and use the destructive eating pattern to gain control over their lives.
The stereotypical image of an anorexic is of a bed-bound teenage girl looking as though she's just arrived from one of the world's famine spots with a xylophone back. But it's important to remember that this kind of intense starvation is not the only symptom of an eating disorder. A person with an eating disorder may maintain a normal body weight and so their condition may go unnoticed for years. This is more often the case with bulimia. Like anorexia, bulimia develops from an obsessive desire to be thin. However, instead of not eating, the person alternates between frantic bingeing and drastic purging (by self-induced vomiting and the abuse of laxatives and diuretics) or periods of excessive fasting and exercise.The feelings about body weight and shape may not result in an attempt to loose dramatic amounts of weight, and so the condition can continue. In the long-term this can cause irregular heartbeat,damaged kidneys,eroded teeth.
Compulsive eating -Compulsive eaters differ from people with bulimia in that, after binge eating, they don't try to get rid of what they've eaten. Many of them feel powerless to control their desire to keep 'comfort eating'. They may develop health problems as a result of carrying too much weight.Anorexia - This often starts during the teens and may be a result of emotional problems connected with becoming an adult, as well as low self-esteem and/or physical or emotional abuse.It shares many features with bulimia. People with anorexia develop a fear of fatness that goes far beyond that of most dieters. The need to control their weight dominates all other emotions and food becomes the central issue of their lives.Binge eating is less likely, but the obsessions with weight and shape, exercising and the use of vomiting and laxatives to reduce weight are often major elements. WARNING SIGNS OF ANOREXIA NERVOSA
Anorexia Nervosa is a dangerous illness when it comes to depriving oneself of essential foods which the body requires on a daily basis so as to lose weight and maintain an unrealistic and distorted body-shape. Being constantly fed with messages and images from the media which promote "thinness" and healthy eating, Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder which has consequently developed as an obsession with losing the most weight possible in order to maintain a body which matches these manipulative images which dominate the global views of society today.
- Anorexia Nervosa has serious consequences which develop not only physically but, to a greater influence, emotionally as well. The predominant signs and symptoms of the eating disorder Anorexia Nervosa include:
- Weight loss of a dramatic amount as the result of a misperception of body weight and shape to the extent that a sufferer feels fat even when they are underweight
- Frequent weighing of oneself and a focus on even the tiniest fluctuation in weight
- Avoidance of social gatherings where food is involved
- Having constant excuses for not eating and skipping meals
- Eating the minimal amount of food, which is predominantly low in calories and fat
- Determination in a sufferer to become thinner and thinner due to an intense fear of body fat and gaining weight
- Practicing an excessive exercise regimen
WARNING SIGNS OF BULIMIA NERVOSA
- Visiting the toilet soon after meals (often you will hear the sound of running water to hide the sound of vomiting)
- Depressive moods
- Strict dieting followed by increased criticism of body size or shape
- Difficulty swallowing and retaining food
- Puffiness around the face (below cheeks)
- Sudden appearance of acne
- Damage to the throat
- Headache
- Dizziness and petty stealing of money to buy food for binges
- Increased impulsive behaviour and/or argumentativeness
- Possible increase in drug use
- Recurrent episodes of binge eating – this is generally defined as eating more in a short period of time (less than two hours) than most people would eat under the same circumstances
- A sense of lack of control over the eating
- Vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, enemas or other medications, fasting or excessive exercise are then used to try to compensate for any weight gain as a result of the binge
- The person has a distorted idea of her/his body shape and size and evaluates herself/himself in terms of weight and size.
CAUSES OF BULIMIA & ANOREXIA
- A low self-esteem. Never being happy with the way one looks and not being self confident.
- Fear of "growing up". Some teenagers are afraid of becoming adults and the changes in their bodies that go along with being an adolescent.
- Weight obsession in society. Society favours the person who is thin. Chubby children are teased and wire thin models like Kate Moss are admired.
- Control. Some adolescents feel that they are losing control of their lives and strive to control their bodies by depriving it of food. Eating then becomes a constant battle and food an enemy to be defeated.
